About the Program
The Cosmetology course at CCTC is designed to prepare students to become a licensed cosmetologist and teach them the basic skills they will need to begin working in a salon as a beauty professional. Cosmetology is a two-year program that spans from the student’s junior to senior year. The cosmetology board of Virginia requires that high school students attend class for 840 hours and that each student completes a total of 327 services on a hair styling mannequin or live model.
Students will have the opportunity to perform a variety of services such as hair styling, haircuts, perms/relaxers, colors, highlights, as well as basic nail and skin care services. All the materials needed to perform services such as blow dryers, styling irons, rollers, haircutting sears, haircolor/lightener, gloves, foils, etc. will be provided by the school. All products used in our lab area are professional grade products you would find in a real hair salon. Services are generally performed on a hair styling mannequin, but students will have the opportunity to work on live models.
Though cosmetology is largely a hands-on field, we do spend quite a bit of time in our classroom reviewing theory and studying for the state board exam. It is necessary for cosmetology students to be prepared to read, take notes, and study for tests just as they would in any other class. Cosmetology 1 & 2 both have weekly tests and quizzes on topics from the Milady text book.
Certifications
All CCTC cosmetology 2 students will take the Virginia Cosmetology Exam at the end of their senior year. It is a two-part exam: theory and practical. The theory exam consists of 120 multiple choice questions on topics such as infection control, chemistry, anatomy, nail/skin diseases, color theory, and more. The practical exam is a 2-part exam where students will perform a list of predetermined skills on a hair styling mannequin. Skills on the practical exam may include basic sanitation, hair cutting and styling, texture services, hair color services, waxing, and first aid procedures.

About the Program
Cosmetology 2 students will continue to expand on the techniques and services learned in cosmetology 1. In addition to advanced cutting and coloring skills, students will learn how to perform waxing and acrylic nail services. In the classroom we will focus on state board study skills and learning more about salon business operations.
The state board exam will be a large focus in Cosmetology 2. Students are expected to participate in mock practical and theory exams, which will mimic the real conditions of the test.
